You’ve been asked to complete a test as part of your interview process, but why?

Any test you’re asked to complete will be relevant to the role you are applying for. For example, you may be asked to complete a generic aptitude test or alternatively a mock-up task that mimics the role.

An aptitude test is a way for us to assess someone’s ability on a given activity. The internet is full of example tests. Have a go at completing a couple online, ahead of sitting the test as part of the interview process. This will give you a good idea about what the test may entail.

Tests are only a small part of the interview process. They give the hiring manager a little more information about your abilities to help them make the most informed decision about who to hire.

The word “test” can often put fear into people, but equally some people aren’t phased by it. A way to help minimise any stress surrounding tests is to practice. The test isn’t designed to trip you up.

You might also be asked to complete a personality questionnaire. The format of this might feel like an aptitude test, but it’s completely different! Hiring managers may decide to include this as part of the interview process if they feel certain personality traits could be a key indicator of potential success in the role. It’s important with these tests that you answer honestly: there is no right or wrong answer. The test will be able to tell if it thinks you are answering in a desirable way, i.e. how you feel an employer would want you to answer.

Finally, tests are just a small part of the interview process. The information you provide during your interview, and supporting information (such as qualification certificates), are also very important parts of the interview process. Take the test as an opportunity to showcase your skills to us – and good luck!
